Gilbert is fascinated with mythology, but what moves him most are the mythic moments people experience day to day, then lose. “I am haunted / by the day I walked through the Greek village … and somebody began / playing Chopin, slowly, faintly …” Gilbert believes that these brief moments of glory are the best we can hope for in life.

12 hours of driving to and from Georgia to spend 5 hours walking around taking pictures for my Southern History, Memory, and Rhetoric class. Lots of work still to go. At least the houses were pretty. Antebellum life is awesome (minus the whole primitive technology, threat of war, and the minor details of slave and women discrimination).

Don’t forget the removal of Indians!
